Turmeric grows wild in the forests of South and Southeast Asia, and is cultivated for culinary and medicinal use.

Curcumin cautions and drug interactions
- Dietary turmeric may inhibit the anti-tumor action of chemotherapeutic agents such as cyclophosphamide.
- Curcumin may interact with drugs that are substrates of P-glycoprotein (P-gp) or cytochrome P450 enzymes.
- The oxalates in turmeric promote formation of kidney stones, but these compounds are virtually absent from curcumin.
- Patients with bile duct obstruction, gallstones, and GI disorders including stomach ulcers and hyperacidity disorders should not take this supplement. Although curcumin prevents gallstone and kidney stone formation in rodents, it promotes contraction of the gallbladder, which will exacerbate gallstone problems.
